Ankle Sprain/Instability

Ankle Sprain/Instability

Ankle sprain is common in physiotherapy. There is a high recurrent rate due to reduced strength, range of motion, and balance. Comprehensive rehabilitation is crucial to minimise the risk of re-injury.

Our Sports Physiotherapist has specialised training to determine the severity of the injury and more importantly rule out other serious pathology like a fracture. We will help you gain confidence in returning to running and sports.

Injuries to look out for:

  • The ATFL, CFL +/- PTFL ligaments can be damaged in a lateral ankle sprain.
  • Medial ankle sprain which affects the deltoid ligament.
  • High ankle injury that involves the syndesmosis.
  • Lateral foot sprain can affect the bifurcate and dorsal calcaneocuboid ligaments.
  • Other considerations: Osteochondral lesion of the talus, peroneal tendon injury, fractures, flexor hallucis tendon injury, tibialis posterior tendon injury, arthritis, sinus tarsi syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, posterior ankle impingement.

After completing a comprehensive assessment, our sports physiotherapist can refer you for scans or to a specialist when necessary.
